Inauguration Day

From the frontpage of today's Tages Anzeiger (Zurich daily newspaper), which reads "An example for America and for us". Regardless of your views on the last eight years, it's refreshing for America to be viewed as a positive model again in Europe. After Obama sealed the election, a European friend remarked to me that Obama's election marks a key difference between American and Europe: in America it is possible for a black man to be president. That's something to be quite proud of.

While it remains to be seen how long European optimism will actually last, it's nevertheless fun to be the popular kids in Europe for a little while.

The headline is also interesting considering the general mistrust of "the Other" that is cropping up once again in the SVP's (Swiss People's Party) political campaign posters. Instead of black sheep, we have ravens picking apart Switzerland:

I'm looking forward to the next symbol of immigrated evil from the SVP....maybe Tom will want to get some extra mileage out of that eyepatch he's been sporting for Valkyrie.

Now that's scary.
